Corrosion Tests:

Our accelerated corrosion testing are used to monitor materials or coating's resistance to corrosion over a period of time. The tests can be tailored to meet specific customer's requirements and it can vary in duration from as little as 2 hours and up to 1000 hours, depending on the type of test and the specification being worked to.

1. Salt Spray Testing

Salt Spray Cabinet

Materials, components or coatings can be tested either continuously or by fog/dry cyclic testing. The harshness of the test applied to a component is dependent on the material and coating types to be tested and the recommended specifications.

Although there are many different tests that can be carried out, those most commonly used, in increasing order of harshness include Neutral Salt Spray (NSS), Acetic Acid Salt Spray (AASS) and Copper Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray (CASS).

Humidity Testing

Humidity tests can be carried out at a constant temperature or on cyclical temperature settings.  Typical test durations Undertaken in 100% humidity fall between 48 and 240 hours.Usual specifications include constant temperature testing (ASTM D2247),cyclic temperature testing (BS 3900:Pt F2)

Intercrystalline, Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Testing

The materials or components to be tested are immersed in solution, usually an acidic solution, although it can be alkaline.  The temperature and time of immersion are usually determined by the controlling Specification. Typical specifications and tests include ASTM G28 Ferric Sulphate, AMS 2722C (ASTM G110), BSEN ISO 3651, ASTM G48 Ferric Chloride and ASTM A262.

Intergranular corrosion (Money penny Straus) test is often carried out on “stainless steel” to confirm its resistance to grain boundary corrosion.

Paint and Coating Tests

Other tests available in HIST's laboratory in addition to salt spray and humidity testing, are tests some motor companies often asked for as alternative and it Solvent or Chemical Resistance Tests, Water Soak Tests, Paint Thickness Tests, Adhesion Tests and Heat Resistance Tests.

2. Electrochemical Testing

We provide electrochemical test techniques for corrosion rate determination, crevice corrosion performance and resistance to pitting corrosion. We offer these services as routine tests either as a part of materials selection or as a research and development programmes.

Our electrochemical tests include ASTM G61 cyclic potentiodynamic polarisation measurements (to assess pitting and crevice corrosion resistance) and ASTM G59 polarisation resistance measurements (to determine corrosion rates).
